In today’s mining and aggregates industry, where rising energy costs and environmental pressures are reshaping operational strategies, High-Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) are emerging as a compelling alternative to traditional crushing methods. HPGRs operate using two counter-rotating rolls that apply very high pressure—up to 300 MPa—on the material fed between them.   • Compact Footprint: Their relatively small size makes them suitable for brownfield projects or space-constrained sites.

From Niche to Mainstream

HPGRs were first adopted in the diamond and cement sectors, but their application has since expanded to a wide range of ores including iron, gold, copper, and platinum. They are now being used in:

  • Tertiary crushing and pebble re-crushing in SAG circuits

  • Iron ore pellet feed preparation

  • Dry processing of industrial minerals

  • Manufactured sand production

In India, where dry processing and low water consumption are growing priorities, HPGRs offer a powerful solution—especially in arid zones and environmentally sensitive areas.

Barriers to Widespread Adoption

Despite their advantages, HPGRs come with certain challenges:

  • High Initial Investment: Capital costs can be significantly higher than conventional crushers.

  • Operational Complexity: Successful use requires careful control of feed size, moisture content, and roll wear.

  • Material Preparation: HPGRs perform best with screened, uniform, and dry feed.
